Philippians 1: 17-19

Philippians 1:17-19 is my focus point today, but necessary to look back at verse 16 to just pull it together.  While reading through these verses in different translations, I realized that several words are being translated slightly different. Upon checking the Strongs, all words could be correct..but each casting a slightly different light.  so I decided to go back to commentary to see what the theologians have dug up on it.

Honestly not much more than we did at Philter48.  While reading this over and over this week, one thing just screamed at me!  There are so many false prophets, and others who really are not intentionally teaching wrong doctrine, still wrong all the same.  As the body of Christ we really need to take Pauls lead in this.  He had every human right to yell and scream and start petitions, and bring a light to the gospel that was vindictive, and intolerant.  But he didn’t.  He was resolved to the fact that God is in control, and no matter how someone else is acting, or making his life harder, GOD will reign, and all will work to HIS glory, and Paul is good with that.

I don’t know about you..but I have had about all I can stand of petitions in my email presented to me in the Holy name of Jesus.  And others screaming out over one verse they have against sinners.  WE ALL ARE SINNERS.  For by Grace we are saved…  for real, lets take Pauls lead in this.  Call sin “sin” and then remember that you can not change someone, and you can not be the Judge on this earth.  God has given that rite to HIS SON.  We need to bend the knee to a HOLY GOD just like Paul did, call it what it is, and then get on with it…God’s way, not ours..HIS glory..not ours.. Paul’s focus is intense, and as I grow in the LORD, expecting and hoping for that same focus,  love and admiration for the ONE who knows and plans our days.

If you would like to read what this commentary has to say about these verses…

Commentary- Jamison, Fausset, Brown

Philippians 1:16-19

16, 17. The oldest manuscripts transpose these verses, and read, “These (last) indeed out of love (to Christ and me), knowing (the opposite of ‘thinking’ below) that I am set (that is, appointed by God, 1Th 3:3 ) for the defense of the Gospel ( Phl 1:7 , not on my own account). But the others out of contention (or rather, ‘a factious spirit’; ‘cabal’; a spirit of intrigue, using unscrupulous means to compass their end; ‘self-seeking’ [ALFORD]) proclaim (the Greek is not the same as that for ‘preach,’ but, ‘announce‘) Christ, not sincerely (answering to ‘but of a spirit of intrigue,’ or ‘self-seeking’). Literally, ‘not purely’; not with a pure intention; the Jewish leaven they tried to introduce was in order to glorify themselves ( Gal 6:12, 13 ; however, see on JF & B for Php 1:18), thinking (but in vain) to raise up (so the oldest manuscripts read) tribulation to my bonds.” Their thought was, that taking the opportunity of my being laid aside, they would exalt themselves by their Judaizing preaching, and depreciate me and my preaching, and so cause me trouble of spirit in my bonds; they thought that I, like themselves, sought my own glory, and so would be mortified at their success over mine. But they are utterly mistaken; “I rejoice” at it ( Phl 1:18 ), so far am I from being troubled at it.

      18. What follows from this? Does this trouble me as they thought it would? “Notwithstanding” their unkind thought to me, and self-seeking intention, the cause I have at heart is furthered “every way” of preaching, “whether in pretense (with a by motive, Phl 1:16 ) or in truth (out of true ‘love’ to Christ, Phl 1:17 ), Christ is proclaimed; and therein I do rejoice, yea, and I will rejoice.” From this it would seem that these self-seeking teachers in the main “proclaimed Christ,” not “another Gospel,” such as the Judaizers in Galatia taught ( Gal 1:6-8 ); though probably having some of the Jewish leaven (see on JF & B for Php 1:15,16), their chief error was their self-seeking envious motive, not so much error of doctrine; had there been vital error, Paul would not have rejoiced. The proclamation of CHRIST,” however done, roused attention, and so was sure to be of service. Paul could thus rejoice at the good result of their bad intentions ( Psa 76:10 Isa 10:5, 7 ).

      19. turn to my salvation–“turn out to me for, (or unto) salvation.” This proclamation of Christ every way will turn out to my spiritual good. Christ, whose interests are my interests, being glorified thereby; and so the coming of His kingdom being furthered, which, when it does come, will bring completed “SALVATION” ( Hbr 9:28 ) to me and all whose “earnest expectation” ( Phl 1:20 ) is that Christ may be magnified in them. So far is their preaching from causing me, as they thought, tribulation in my bonds ( Phl 1:16 ). Paul plainly quotes and applies to himself the very words of the Septuagint ( Job 13:16 ), “This shall turn out to my salvation,” which belong to all God’s people of every age, in their tribulation (compare Job 13:15 ).
through your prayer and the supply–The Greek intimately joins the two nouns together, by having but one preposition and one article: “Through your prayer and (the consequent) supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ (obtained for me through your prayer).”

Philippians 1:9-11

And it is my prayer that your love may abound more and more, with knowledge and all discernment, 10 so that you may approve what is excellent, and so be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, 11 filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.(ESV)

(Study notes from the ESV)Phil. 1:9–11 The first petition in Paul’s prayer is that God would cause the cardinal Christian virtue of love to abound more and more, and that it would be accompanied by knowledge and all discernment, so that the Philippians’ love would find expression in wise actions that would truly benefit others and glorify God. As Christians grow in their understanding of what it means to follow Jesus, they will increasingly be able to affirm and practice what is excellent. Such joyful obedience to God will give them the confidence of being found pure and blameless when Jesus returns. This does not imply instantaneous spiritual perfection but rather an increasing likeness to Christ. But fruit of righteousness is not produced in the believer’s own power. Because that fruit comes through Jesus Christ, it will result in the glory and praise of God.

As I studied through this section, and read comments and discussion at Philter48, I was reminded of how often we stop at the “pure and blameless” section and count ourselves OUT!  Through the worlds eyes, we are not pure and blameless..endless grudges have been held against us, and some with good worldly reason. Praise God that HE is not like the world!  The difference between willful or presumptuous sin and transgressions are life changing to one who may be carrying reproach of sins past.  Pure and blameless is being free from willful, repetitive sin. You know the kind..the one we look at and know in our heart of hearts that it would be wrong for us to do it, and we run right in delighting in the forbidden. Not only once, but since we repented, we feel okay about doing it again and again, with all intention of one day laying this thing down.  (Let me just give this warning..God is not a fool, and forgive you HE will, right after that whoopin’ you are asking for..HE will make sure you do not forget what defiance in the face of our Almighty King will bring  you.) We will battle with sin, that everyday sin, someone made you angry, and your tongue got away (not repetitively), when we cry out to the LORD to help us forgive, we repent that we know we are unforgiving, unloving…the things that we go through while learning and growing in HIM.  Those are sin as well, but God has seperated sin and willful sin…We learn obedience, and although something is sinful and totally appeals to us we decline, no willful sin.  There is freedom in this for me.

Psalm 19:13 Keep back your servant also from presumptuous sins;
let them not have dominion over me!
Then I shall be blameless,
and innocent of great transgression.

Pauls prayer is beautiful, and one we all need to apply to ourselves as well as others.. Love, knowledge, discernment, pure and blameless, what is excellent, fruit of righteousness..through Jesus Christ all to HIS Glory!

Holidays are NOT for stress

In my past, I lived in a Shelter for Abuse Women(do you know this place is over crowded over the holidays?), not once but twice, both times over the holidays.  Just the name of “holidays” made me cringe and just drag my feet.  I have wonderful husband, who has worked very hard to change that in me.  Success! the last few years I have actually looked forward to it.  Learning to walk with the LORD has been my healing in this area.

As I look around, I see men carrying a stress that is not the normal stress of day to day or regular bills, its stress knowing the holidays are coming…Ladies, they really want to give all that is on the requests list, but we really need to give them a break…When HE asks what you want for Christmas…eliminate the disappointment and hard feelings, and just tell him. THen allow him to tell you if he can make that happen or not.  Most women I know will say they want nothing..and then are angry because he didn’t see through that to mean something.  Ahhh hit a nerve huh?

Let’s set out this year looking to keep Jesus first in our thoughts and shopping. Lets give the man a break, and remember that he is not here to satisfy our every whim, and while shopping for our kids, keep it within the budget…remind them over and over that this holiday season is about giving and not getting.  Only the LORD can fill our empty voids, not our husbands, and not expensive gifts.

Entering this Thanksgiving Holiday with thanks for all that I have, (a post just on that later)and praying to be a wife that not only pleases my man, but pleases God.

ATTENTION MEN:  YOU ARE OFF THE HOOK, WE HAVE DECIDED TO LET GOD BE GOD, AND YOU CAN JUST BE OUR MEN!

Would it not be the coolest thing to hear this holiday…

“Her children arise and call her blessed, her husband also, and he praises her.”  Proverbs 31:28   (this is what I am working on for Christmas, what I really want)

The Ship is sinking…

My heart has been amazed at the amount of compassion that our LORD shines on us daily. As I go through my day and see so many children who are unloved, forgotten, and just missing the happy skip a child should have…I am reminded.

The world is getting worse, and its supposed to…that means HE is coming soon!  Mothers who can just be so consumed with theirself, and have no compassion on their own children…appalling!  So many who say they don’t believe in anything, and yet they are their own god, self worship!  Oh the long suffering and patience of our HOLY GOD, to not just wipe us out.  This is just the tip of the iceburg, and the ship is sinking…

With each heart ache I feel, I turn and lay it in HIS hands, and watch as HE turns it into something priceless.  When we get to Heaven we will never feel our hearts break again, He is going to wipe every tear away…but until then…

We need to pray for the lost, pray for our hearts to have compassion, and to reach with everything we have and don’t have as if we were watching someone drowning, they are.  We need to feel that kind of desperation in reaching out to the lost.  We know a secret, we are the lights reflecting the Son, its not just ours, its for them as well.  We need to give it away, to shine like crazy!

Oh Father God, how lost we once were, and in your mercy you rescued us.  Don’t let us forget where we have come from, fill us over and over with your compassion and love, give our spirits an urgency to lose self, and allow you to flow from our lips and actions.

Laying all the children I come in contact with at your feet, and remembering and believing that you knew them before you formed them in their mothers womb.  You have a plan, and I lift them to you, to protect them, reveal yourself to them, allow them to feel your love tonight, and don’t let them leave here without you.  Thank you for allowing my heart to break..I know you have my attention when that happens, and you always but it back together more in love with YOU.  Your princess who sees the signs, and feels the desperation to keep pressing on.

Note to “Self”

Self, you have become extremely annoying and overtly distracting.  Seems to me you were supposed to be dead, but when I least expect you..there you are with all your ugliness!  So what ever it takes, and however long the battle, you- Self can’t win.  You see…

I have been crucified with Christ, and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me.  Galations 2:20

I am limiting my time this week on blogsville, I will still be around just not near as much…I am battling “self”, and not quite understanding how something that is dead, still has so much strength.  Do you battle with Self, is this something that will never end on earth?  If so, then what does Galations 2:20 mean…?

Thought of this video and you can go there and see it Mercy Me- so long self
