Blogged Bible Study – John 13 Servant King

Jesus Washes the Disciples’ Feet

5Then He poured* water into the basin, and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded. 6So He came* to Simon Peter. He said* to Him, “Lord, do You wash my feet?” 7Jesus answered and said to him, “What I do you do not realize now, but you will understand hereafter.” 8Peter said* to Him, “Never shall You wash my feet!” Jesus answered him, “If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me.” 9Simon Peter said* to Him, “Lord, then wash not only my feet, but also my hands and my head.” 10Jesus said* to him, “He who has bathed needs only to wash his feet, but is completely clean; and you are clean, but not all of you. 11For He knew the one who was betraying Him; for this reason He said, “Not all of you are clean.”

12So when He had washed their feet, and taken His garments and reclined at the table again, He said to them, “Do you know what I have done to you? 13“You call Me Teacher and Lord; and you are right, for so I am. 14“If I then, the Lord and the Teacher, washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. 15“For I gave you an example that you also should do as I did to you. 16“Truly, truly, I say to you, a slave is not greater than his master, nor is one who is sent greater than the one who sent him. 17“If you know these things, you are blessed if you do them.

After thinking on this and thinking on this…I know the “christian” answers..but the questions are still unsettled in my mind…My King was a servant and set the example for us, the reminder that we will not be greater than our Master.  A blessing for those who see the example and do it.

I just came home from listening to an amazing woman speak about the Persecuted church, and how the Voice of the Martys are traveling into remote areas of the world, behind communist lines, into radical Islam to encourage the believers who have lost their life to save it…in one of those places someone washed her feet and cleaned her up from her hard travel to get there.  I saw the tears in her eyes and the tremble in her voice…she came to bless them, they blessed her.

We, the body of Christ, in Western Culture have to take this to heart. We need to stop looking like we are above what our sisters and brothers in Christ are facing daily, and find a way to wash their feet.  In what ever means we have. Quoting the speaker…”This is not a social issue, this is a family issue”.  How are we serving each other?  How are we being a picture of Jesus right where we are?

Our King crawled on the floor, and washed the disciples feet, HE was a servant and a King…HE is a beautiful

Beautiful Mystery-Truth of GOD

While reading through the 13th chapter of John, this song continued to flood my mind. That is not totally unusual as I love Caedmons Call, and have played this cd many times as I sat by the river, and in my car til my children knew every word from every song…This always seemed to fan the flame.  Check it out…

Caedmons Call-Home Again

Beautiful Mystery

I tried to know
Every mystery
Soon realized, no
It was too much for me

‘Cause most things true
Are simple and complex
So it is with You
What else should I expect

You suffer the seeker
In You they abide

You are to me
A beautiful mystery
You are to me
A Servant and a King
You’re a beautiful mystery

You’re like the water
I can feel but not grasp
Still You say all I’ve gotta do
Is seek and knock and ask

You are to the river
What hems it in and sets it free

The truth is a river
Where the strong can swim down deep
The weak and the broken
Can walk across so easily

words and music by Aaron Tate, Derek Webb and Cliff Young

Recently some terms of Christianity have been brought to my attention, and honestly has caused me to question what I believe, and if in fact, I have crossed the line somewhere into something that is not truthful..or not of God.  One of them is “Post Modern”  First thought..HUH?  So I am thrilled to add this comment to the end of the post, from Joshua Moore/Caedmons Call..explaining the Behind the song…

Behind the Song:
“The last few decades of liberal philosophy have convinced us, even Christians, that truth is something we may interpret or fashion according to our own observations. The effects of this sweeping, post-modern epidemic may have actually infected our modern inferences of scripture. When it comes to comprehending who Jesus is physically and metaphysically, we must openly embrace the notion that truth is something that God himself fashioned and instituted. Secondly, it is He alone who sustains the fabric of the absolute. This throws us upon the mercy of His understanding and shows us the beauty of never being able to grasp the complexities of His character. We are prompted to acknowledge the magnificent radiance and beauty of His truth.” – Joshua Moore (Caedmon’s Call)

When I grow up…

Did you ever notice children at play thinking about when they grow up? Sometimes I just want to tell them..Don’t grow up…not likely that it will happen..

When I was a young teen, I decided to make the best of my circumstances and learn as much as I could and be the best at everything I tried.  Mostly, I succeeded at lots…Quality Assurance, mechanical set up, engineering (classes not quite finished, and I won’t)…but it was all about me, and God really woke me up to it. It seemed that I was just building my self up with an “I will show them” attitude.  Now as I drive a school bus, I look at the same eyes that I have been so familiar with, and the talk of being something..making a name for thier self…and praying for God to grab these hearts, and let HIM  have HIS place in those little lives.

Now as an Adult I find that the hardest thing about growing up is growing down, learning to allow God to be God in my life, and learning to take HIS hand and trust HIM, to not give a second thought to what will happen tomorrow, because HE is right today is enough, and tomorrow is already undercontrol in HIM.  Learning that its not about the name I make for myself…Its about ..Loving HIM with all my heart and all my soul, and all my mind, and all my strength…

In my heart HE has been saying that to me… “be the best at loving me..strive for that..”

So what do you want to be when you grow down?

What we have done to the least of these…or not done

God’s heart/compassion is close to the oppressed.  How do I know that? Its throughout the Bible, and so often as followers of Christ we neglect HIS heart, and neglect to do what HE has already told us He wants. Just a suggestion…but maybe we are at a loss for what HE wants, alittle too much of asking for our boundaries to be expanded, and not enough of working it out where we are..just my thought…  In Exodus 22:21-27, not only is HIS heart with them, but a stern warning that they will cry out to HIM, and it will kindle HIS anger.  I have heard the arguments about this scripture being only for Isreal.  But are we not the spiritual seed of Abraham? (Galations 3:29) If that is not enough to assure you that we are to be about this work, take a look at Daniel 4:27, Daniel’s advice to King Neb…repent..and be kind to the oppressed.  I know I know I know…still old testament and still not convinced that it has anything to do with today in this present age.  Look at Matthew 25: 31-46.  This passage of scripture always lights a fire under me.  Sheep or goats?? that is what is the question.  Below I have listed the scripture for all to read from the HCSB.  We seriously want to be sheep and not goats.  There has been much talk of “Doing Something”, and Mandy started it up on line, and got a bunch of people motivated…I don’t think God is merely asking us, ya know if ya have any extra time…I think HE is telling us..DO SOMETHING! THIS IS MY HEART! One more argument..”I don’t know anyone” my advice to you is..pray to meet someone who needs your help. Tam has a post up that encourages us to meet our neighbors, wonder what we will find right out our door?

Exodus 22:21-27

21“You must not exploit a foreign resident or oppress him, since you were foreigners in the land of Egypt.

22“You must not mistreat any widow or fatherless child. 23If you do mistreat them, they will no doubt cry to Me, and I will certainly hear their cry. 24My anger will burn, and I will kill you with the sword; then your wives will be widows and your children fatherless.

25“If you lend money to My people—to the poor person among you, you must not be like a moneylender to him; you must not charge him interest.

26“If you ever take your neighbor’s cloak as collateral, return it to him before sunset. 27For it is his only covering; it is the clothing for his body. What will he sleep in? And if he cries out to Me, I will listen because I am compassionate.

Galations 3:29

29And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s seed, heirs according to the promise.

Daniel 4: 27

27Therefore, may my advice seem good to you my king. Separate yourself from your sins by doing what is right, and from your injustices by showing mercy to the needy. Perhaps there will be an extension of your prosperity.”

Matthew 25: 31-46

31“When the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the angels with Him, then He will sit on the throne of His glory. 32All the nations will be gathered before Him, and He will separate them one from another, just as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33He will put the sheep on His right and the goats on the left. 34Then the King will say to those on His right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.

35    For I was hungry and you gave Me something to eat;

    I was thirsty and you gave Me something to drink;

    I was a stranger and you took Me in;

36    I was naked and you clothed Me;

    I was sick and you took care of Me;

    I was in prison and you visited Me.’

37“Then the righteous will answer Him, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry and feed You, or thirsty and give You something to drink? 38When did we see You a stranger and take You in, or without clothes and clothe You? 39When did we see You sick, or in prison, and visit You?’

40“And the King will answer them, ‘I assure you: Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of Mine, you did for Me.’ 41Then He will also say to those on the left, ‘Depart from Me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the Devil and his angels!

42    For I was hungry

    and you gave Me nothing to eat;

    I was thirsty

    and you gave Me nothing to drink;

43    I was a stranger

    and you didn’t take Me in;

    I was naked

    and you didn’t clothe Me,

    sick and in prison

    and you didn’t take care of Me.’

44“Then they too will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry, or thirsty, or a stranger, or without clothes, or sick, or in prison, and not help You?’

45“Then He will answer them, ‘I assure you: Whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for Me either.’

46“And they will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”
