John 10:14-18, 25-30, 36-38
14“I am the good shepherd, and I know My own and My own know Me, 15even as the Father knows Me and I know the Father; and I lay down My life for the sheep. 16“I have other sheep, which are not of this fold; I must bring them also, and they will hear My voice; and they will become one flock with one shepherd. 17“For this reason the Father loves Me, because I lay down My life so that I may take it again. 18“No one has taken it away from Me, but I lay it down on My own initiative. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This commandment I received from My Father.”
“I told you, and you do not believe; the works that I do in My Father’s name, these testify of Me. 26“But you do not believe because you are not of My sheep. 27“My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me; 28and I give eternal life to them, and they will never perish; and no one will snatch them out of My hand. 29“£My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand. 30“I and the Father are one.”
36do you say of Him, whom the Father sanctified and sent into the world, ‘You are blaspheming,’ because I said, ‘I am the Son of God’? 37“If I do not do the works of My Father, do not believe Me; 38but if I do them, though you do not believe Me, believe the works, so that you may know and understand that the Father is in Me, and I in the Father.”
Psalm 23- The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want, HE makes me lie down in green pastures, HE leads me beside the still waters. HE restores my soul; HE leads me in paths of righteousness for HIS names sake. Although I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; Because YOU are with me; YOUR rod and YOUR staff, they comfort me. YOU prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; YOU annoint my head with oil; my cup runs over. Surely goodness and mercy will follow me all the days of my life; and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.
The sheep hear the true shepherds voice. That is what it says..do you know the voice of the shepherd? The shepherd loves HIS sheep, and lays down HIS life for them, HE doesn’t run and hide and look out for himself. There really isn’t any earthly glory to be had in dying for sheep. I wonder if that is what the heavenlies was wondering as they watched HIM lay down for us…just my own thinking…did they gasp, and wonder why HE did not free himself, and were they ready to fly down to HIS aid, waiting for HIS word to come?
Amazing love, HE said, HE has the authority to lay HIS life down, and to pick it up. HE really could have said no, they are not worth it. But HE chose obedience to the Father, and felt we were worth it. HE didn’t have to do anything, and then HE encourages us…HE says NO one can snatch us out of HIS hand..HE and the Father are one.
I deliberately skipped the narrative between, sometimes I just want what HE said, and not so much what they thought…why? because we tend to make excuses for the people of that time, and we are just like them, in more ways than we would like to admit. So just on what HE said, would you have believed HIM? Do you believe HIM?
